Holbein Artists Watercolor Review
HOLBEIN ARTISTS WATERCOLORS is an artist grade watercolor made in Japan. The name of the company is inspired on the Hans Holbein a German Artis. I going to test a 18 tubes colos set, review the colors and the performance of this watercolor including color swatch and video demonstration.
Holbein watercolors comes in a variety of sets sizes of 12, 18, 24, 30, 48, 60 and 108 tubes. They also made half pans that comes in sets of 12, 18 and 24 and 36 color. Both the pans and tubes can be found in open stock on Blick store, I will put the link bellow for you guys , witch is always helpful so you don’t have to buy the whole set when you run out of some color. They have 108 color available which made a very nice selection of colors.
For this demonstration I used Canson XL Watercolor Paper 140 lb / 300 g and I going to test the 18 color set.
They are small tubes and each tube comes with 5ml (0.17 fl.oz) but with watercolor a small amount goes a long way so it’s not a big deal.
The colors in this set are: Jaune Brillant, Permanent Yellow Lemon, Permanent Yellow Deep,Vermilion Hue, Rose Madder, Crimson Lake, Mineral Violet, Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue Hue, Compose Blue, Viridian Hue, Permanent Green n2, Permanent Green n.1, Yellow Ochre, Burnet Sienna, Buret Umber, Ivory Black Hue, Chinese White.
This is a very nice selection of color, I honestly don’t need a bigger set. The presence of the white on the set is a good thing, even with the white not being as opaque as I wish it is still helpful in some cases like when you lost your highlights or want to reenforce then.
I did a color swatch to see how the colors looks like and feel how the watercolor behave on the paper. The color are beautiful and vibrant there is no separation.
The White and the Jaune Brillant are opaque and the Yellow Ochre is slightly opaque , other colors are transparente. The colors are very consistente which is something very important.
They mix together beautifully and laid down easily. The pigment is very strong and it is easily mixed with water.
I have play with them for a while, I put them in a palette and they dried with no cracks, also its reactivate really nicely with water, I had no problems with it.
They are lightfast and you can find the information about it on each tube.
With this set of 18 you can mix a variety of color. I made a quick demonstration panting an apple. You can see the full video of this review on my YouTube channel
